DIDN”T ENJOY
Sleeper Cell –> cellphone/ blackberry that was glittery and screen was blank
War Paint–> picture of lipstick tube with red lipstick coming out

ENJOYED

Machine Gun
Looked like twin towers (rectangles with different colors, some with holes (A plane??))

As I observed Jill’s student exhibit I found that I was most intrigued by the machine gun and how she chose a shade of blue for the body and included little gems on it. I thought that maybe she was getting across that the war isn’t as glamorous as some might think it is. Also it made me think that maybe she was trying to get across that women are fighting over there too which might be the reason for putting the gems on it. In addition to this, I was drawn to the piece that had rectangles that was rendered with many colors. With the way the rectangles were arranged, I was instantly reminded of the twin towers. There were holes throughout the rectangles that reminded me of the holes the planes may have made through the towers. I thought that this piece made the strongest impact on myself
I personally did not enjoy the Sleeper Cell piece because I felt it was more detached from the rest of the exhibit because it didn’t really have much to do with the war subject. I also felt like it was more ordinary than the rest of the pieces. In addition to that, I did not enjoy the piece titled War Paint because I felt that it was to clean for a war subject. Overall, I very much so enjoyed the exhibit and loved the creativity of the artist. I was very perplexed by the medium she used for many of her pieces. I would have liked it if the wall labels had mentioned them.

During this course we have learned about a variety of aspects of art. I think analyzing these aspects has given me a new appreciation for art and has enabled me to look at art in a different way. My favorite aspect that we’ve learned about is texture. I like texture in an art piece because of how it adds to a piece.

A piece of art can be very well done, aesthetically pleasing, however for me what really tops of piece off is when it has texture to it. It allows the eye to really visualize every movement of the medium used. For example in a painting if the paint is textured and layered it adds more perspective and depth and overall just makes the art piece a lot more interesting.

I have enjoyed learning about movement within artwork. One of the methods that I like to look at is the multiple exposures method. Showing the same object but placing it in a little bit different place each time so that it appears as if the object is moving. The reason I like this is I think it is interesting with the way it uses space over the page. I am also a very literal person so I like that I can actually see the process of movement rather than have just be insinuated. Like in the book Marcel Duchamps “Nude Descending a Staircase.”

I like in this piece that I can see the outline of a person walking down a staircase through the multiple exposures of the machinery being placed over the piece.

I also like the way mulitple exposure is depicted in this piece called “Movement” by Scott Sawyer. I especially like the way it is seen through the movement of the girls hand.

The other type of movement I really appreciate is the blurred technique. I really think that it give off a really nice effect of movement and again helps me who is a literal person to see movement within the piece. When an object is blurred it just gives off an obvious look of movement

Texture can give a space a two dimensional or three dimensional surface look. This goes the same for value ; with the use of value or positive and negative space it will cause the subject of the painting to stick out depending on how the space is used. For example if the negative space is white and the subject is a darker color the subject will be drawn out more towards the viewer. Like in Malivich’s painting “the black square” shown below.

Line can effect space by the varying thickness of the lines and how it creates form throughout the composition. Color can create great persepective with warm and cool colors for example. A cool color will recede in space which gives the appearance that the background is more distant. Where the warm colors will give perspective that the subject is closer and even two or three dimensional depending on how they are used and paired with other colors and lines and textures. Also placing certain colors together will create a tromp l’ oeil effect. Such as in Chuck Cloose’s pointillism work as shown below.

There are many different ways to use shape to affect a space. Depending on the size placement or thickness of the shape and also utilizing the shape in patterns will affect the space of a composition.

Color is everywhere and many things are defined by their colors. To me color can reflect my mood. I choose what color I wear based on the mood I’m in when I’m getting ready. I also think color can change an atmosphere. I’ve seen houses or restaurants be completely transformed just by a change of paint color on the walls. My favorite season is Fall because I enjoy all of the colors of the changing leaves.

I remember the first time I toured UMD it was with a family friend who was a student there at the time. This was also before I decided to attend here myself. I remember leaving there thinking about how big the campus was especially to me coming from a small private high school. One of my many thoughts was “Wow, I can’t believe they have a museum!” Now that I am attending UMD I have it at my disposal to go there and check it out anytime I want. Sadly enough I haven’t taken the time to do that until it was a part of this class.

I really enjoyed the tour over all and was pleasantly surprised by the artwork the Tweed has on display and in their collection. I wasn’t wasn’t aware that the Tweed had pieces by such well known artists. One of my favorite things was seeing the Andy Warhol room. I remember learning about him in high school and it was crazy to see some of his work in person. I also found it very cool that our tour guide had actually seen Andy Warhol when he lived in New York.

I also really appreciated the fact that there is all levels of artist work displayed especially a whole area set aside for student work. I’m glad they do a weekly rotation of different students work. Such a cool opportunity for art students and for other students to see what they are up to. The collection that is currently in there interested me a lot because she had so many different kinds of pieces. I think my favorite were the wood carved fighters. They brought an interesting visual to the whole collection. Overall the collection was interesting because it wasn’t something I had expected to see but I definitely enjoyed it.

Overall in the Tweed my favorite thing was Ceramic collection. I have taken a few ceramic classes and now how challenging it can be. I don’t think I’ve personally ever seen such a wide variety of ceramic art all in one room before. The different textures used blew me away a lot of ideas I would never have dreamed of. This was by far my favorite part of the tour.

Art to me is a very important part of personal expression. It could be painting, drawing, dancing, singing, ceramics, and so on. I love most forms of art. Of course there are certain artists whose work appeals to me more. One of my favorite painters is Jackson Pollock and I could study and look at his art for hours. I love the colors lines and overall mood from his paintings. A lot of people may just look at his art like it’s just splatters of paint everywhere but thats what I love about art everyone appreciates different things about a piece. I think my favorite form of art however, is music I love the expression and emotion that music brings to people. I believe almost everyone likes and appreciates at least some type of music. Others would even say that the type of music they listen too defines them as a person. I also like the experience of being a part of the artistic creation behind the music this is why I think music is my favorite art form. I am excited to learn about different art types and find an appreciation for new forms new artists, and new ideas.
